Avram Iancu grabbed third spot on podium in the “6633 Arctic Ultra” Marathon – Edition 2019

Avram Iancu ranked third at the 6633 Arctic Ultra Marathon” becoming the fourth Romanian to fight extreme polar conditions and finish the footrace.

This year the route was 48 kilometers longer than usual and the librarian from Petrosani managed to walk the 611 kilometers in 206.5 hours.

Nine of the 15 competitors abandoned the race along the way.

“I managed to complete a wild race at the End of the World. And although I succeeded, I have no merit as it was just a divine gift. The 3rd place at one of the world’s toughest races is just an unforgettable reward for everything we’ve been enduring there. God bless ROMANIA!” wrote Avram Iancu on Facebook on Saturday.

The “6633 Arctic Ultra” Northern Ultramarathon is considered one of the most difficult in the world due to the extremely low temperatures the racers have to face.

This was Iancu’s second participation in the North Pole ultramarathon, after he was forced to abandon the race last year just a day after the kick-off due to a strong pain in his right leg.

Avram Iancu is the first Romanian to have swum relentesly across the English Channel. He also swam the entire length of the Danube river, without using a neoprene suit, in 89 days and across the Black Sea to Istanbul in 60 days.

Last year, the Arctic Marathon was won by another Romanian racer, Tibi Uşeriu, who managed the claim the trophy for the third time in a row.
