Romania owns world’s most powerful laser as Magurele system exceeds 10 PetaWatts in final test. 10% of Sun energy concentrated in a light beam!

“The laser from Magurele has reached the highest power, 10 PetaWatts – 1/10 of Sun’s power to Earth-“, the government announced on Wednesday. The Romanian component of the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) Project focuses on the field of nuclear physics (ELI-NP) and is being built at the Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering – Horia Hulubei (IFIN-HH) in Magurele near Bucharest.

The system, whose installation began in September 2016, was in the final testing procedure, reaching the intended power of 10 PW, the world’s strongest at this moment.

ELI-NP facility will consist of two components:

– A very high intensity laser system, with two 10 PW laser arms able to reach intensities of 10^(23) W/cm^2 and electrical fields of 10^(15) V/m.

– A very intense, brilliant γ beam, narrow bandwidth, with E γ up to 19.5 MeV, which is obtained by incoherent Compton back scattering of a laser light off a very brilliant, intense, classical electron beam.

“It is a great day for us as we communicate the results of the final testing of the Magurele laser system. I can say that the equipment has delivered even more power than we have dreamed of – 10.88 PetaWatts. For those who are not familiar with the notion of multiples and submultiples, that accounts for 10 million billion watts, that’s one tenth of the entire power of the Sun on Earth being concentrated in a ray of light, hence the great technical and scientific achievement, which is a world’s first. This laser aims at helping scientists to create new phenomena, investigate the behavior of matter under extreme conditions that are inexistent on Earth and unravel some of the mysteries of the Universe,” said Nicolae Zamfir, director of the Laser project at Magurele, at an event organized by the Government.

Reaching 10 PW at ELI-NP is a reference point for scientific research worldwide,
Europe making available, in premiere, via Romania, the most powerful laser in
the world. The completion of this unique scientific equipment at the assumed
parameters confirms that ELI-NP is a successful project, a landmark in the
history of Science, and paves the way to top-level international experiments in

The ELI-NP team addresses thanks and congratulations to Thales France and
Thales Romania teams, for their outstanding results and for the fruitful
collaboration during the years of the system’s implementation.
