Evidence of large ice deposits can be seen from a latitude of 85 degrees north up to the North Pole, but there are also some smaller icy deposits even at a latitude of 65 degrees north.

Following this stunning discovery, NASA’s probe Messenger will continue to investigate the planet in the coming months, said representatives of the U.S. space agency. Scientists are pretty confident that also the south pole hides ice pockets, however Messenger’s orbit has not permitted them to get extensive measurements of that region yet.

Speculation about existence of ice deposits on Mercury sparked 20 years ago, but this is the first time researchers have found clear evidence.
