NASA advice for 21 December 2012, the “Apocalypse Day”

Besides the winter solstice, December 21, 2012 is just a simple calendar date and not the Apocalypse one, NASA experts said.

“You can sleep peacefully on December 21 next year,” said astronomer Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near Earth Objects program.

Ancient Mayan calendar featured 365 days for a year, the same as the Gregorian calendar we use now. But there was instead a difference: Maya population did not measure longer periods of time in decades, centuries and millennia. To do that, they used other calendars, one short and one long.

“The short calendar amounted 52 years, and the long one stretched over 5125 years,” said Yeomans. The latter one is gonna end on… 21 December 2012. But, of course, a new calendar will start on 22 December. It’s like saying that every time when our calendars show 31 December, then the end of the world comes. Maya did not write anywhere that the Apocalypse starts when their calendar ends. Actually a new cycle will start.”
