U.S. astronomers have detected unusual strange formations on the surface of the 400 meter-diameter asteroid 2005 YU55 which passed close to Earth on Tuesday night (8 November 2011), according to a press report of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The scientists have made the observations using a 70 meter radio telescope, installed at the Goldstone.

“Animation from a series of images allowed us to study the structure of the asteroid relief at a much greater extent in comparison with the analysis of individual images. We detected some mysterious structures on the surface of 2005 YU55 which we do not understand yet. So far, we have studied less than a half of the celestial body, and we expect other surprises further” – said Lance Benner of JPL, the leader of the asteroid observation group.

Astrophysicists have assumed that the asteroid has a composition of carbon molecules and water ice. NASA intends to analyze data in order to obtain more detailed information on structure, surface, shape, size and other characteristics of it.

NASA’s program for detection of celestial bodies discovered more than 90% of the large objects that might represent a potential threat to Earth.

A 6-frame movie featuring the near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 was made up from data recorded by NASA’s Goldstone Solar System Radar on 7 November 2011 when the space object was at about 1.38 million km from Earth.
