National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) agency seems to focus on the exploration of Earth’s natural satellite.

A Delta 2 Heavy rocket loaded with Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) lifted-off from Cape Canaveral Space Station in Florida on 10 September 2011. The spacecraft which departed from Launch Complex 17B targets Moon’s orbit.

GRAIL mission is integrated in NASA’s Discovery Program. The twin spacecrafts are scheduled for a tandem orbital trip around the Moon for a few months in order to collect data and provide accurate information on gravity field.

GRAIL will employ experimental equipment and techniques already developed by US and Germany for GRACE mission which was deployed in 2002. GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellites monitor the modification of gravity with respect to mass displacement within Earth, e.g. ice melting and changes in ocean circulation.
