Global warming seems to reveal the hidden secrets of the Cold War. A US Army base unknown until recently and built under Greenland glaciers, is expected to surface in the near future with the risk of causing an environmental catastrophe. The top-secret Arctic City had been designed for hosting hundreds ballistic missile and supporting research activities, writes Le Figaro.

Military base “Camp Century” was part of the “Project Iceworm” and constructed in secret under an ice shelf in northwest Greenland in 1959.

In the context of fierce tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, the mysterious base was developed to accommodate 600 missiles in the Arctic area, but also to support research activities. Huge tunnels, laboratories, storage spaces and even a hospital, a cinema and a church were build for this purpose and the whole area was illuminated by a small nuclear reactor.

However, the project was abandoned in 1966 after the Cuban missile crisis, and kept secret until 1997. A report by the Danish Institute for Foreign Policy revealed the existence of the base, but global warming is expected to show it to the world.

William Colgan, a glaciology scientist at York University said that at the current melting rate, Camp Century will be visible in 2090 when posing huge risks for the surroundings.

According to US Military Archives, nearly 200,000 liters of fuel, 240,000 liters of sewage and radioactive waste were left on the spot and risk to end up into the ocean.

In turn, the Pentagon admits a “possible impact of climate change on Camp Century” and vows to “work closely with the Danish Government and the Greenland authorities to resolve some common security issues.”
