NASA to capture 500 ton asteroid, turn it into space station on Moon orbit

NASA plans an unprecedented project! American space explorers want to seize an asteroid which is about 500 tons in weight and the size of 2 buses.

Space Agency’s scientists plan to “capture” an asteroid, change its tracks and turn it into a “space station” orbiting the Moon. This could be used for future space missions to Mars.

The ambitious project is being studied closely by the Department of Science and Technology at the White House as the budget is estimated at $2.6 billion.

U.S. officials are working in this period to develop a new space program for the next decade.

If approved, the unique mission would be the first attempt in history to change the trajectory of a celestial body.

In a feasibility report prepared by NASA and California Institute of Technology / Caltech, U.S. scientists explain how they intend “to catch” the asteroid.

A special “asteroid capture capsule” would be attached to the Atlas V rocket that is launched when the asteroid passes between Earth and the Moon. When reaching the asteroid, the capsule releases a 15.2 meter diameter bag which wraps around the space rock using drawstrings.

The capsule would switch on its propulsion system, using 300 kg of fuel, to bring the asteroid to rest then deflect its path and direct it to a neutral gravity point, located between Earth and Moon.

Thus, astronauts would have a stationary base station where to fuel at and from which to deploy deeper space missions.

NASA has not made yet any comment about this space project, arguing that it is still in negotiations with the White House. However, the American media claims that the new technology could be available in more than 10-12 years from now.
