Astronomers employing HARPS instruments have found 50 new alien planets. High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher instrument (HARPS) is part of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) 3.6-meter telescope located in La Silla, Chile (scroll down for video).

The bunch of alien planets comprises 16 “super-Earths” – planets featuring a larger mass than Earth but smaller than Jupiter. The attention was drawn in particular by one of the super-Earths – named HD 85512b – because it orbits within the habitable zone.

A habitable zone is regarded as a neighbourhood (narrow belt) around a star where life-hospitable conditions are expected. Therefore liquid water which is vital for life sustainability, is very likely to be found on planet’s surface.

HD 85512 b “Super-Earth” has a mass about 3.6 times greater than Earth and is located at a distance of 35 light-years from us. Compared to a universe scale, such a distance is regarded as “close”.

HARPS detection system is based on the slight modifications of radial velocity of Earth-like planets if they circulate close to their star.

HARPS spectrometer provided also an insight into the probability that a Sun-like star to host low-mass planets such as the Earth. It was revealed that about 40% of such stars feature at least one planet less massive than Saturn.
